prominent polluting stain Explanation: Given that this "tongue" is on chalkland, "slick" may not be appropriate, though I guess "tongue" is as good as any. "Ponctuelle" always gives me a headache (point-wise, occasional, from time to time,...?), but here the meaning appears to be that it sticks out. I may be completely wrong, of course, hence low confidence! |

narrow strip of point-source pollution Explanation: This terms made me think of "langue de terre", common expression in geology. "Langue de terre (bande de terre étroite et mince qui sépare deux masses d'eau)" Pollution ponctuelle is often quoted as point-source pollution. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 52 mins (2012-07-04 08:04:48 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Of course here, we re not talking about earth but the expression is close enough to be used as such. localized contaminant plume Explanation: A common term for such a case of groundwater pollution is 'contaminant plume' and the addition of 'ponctuelle' indicates that it is localized (i.e. the specific source has been identified as the factory). A good explanation of groundwater pollution can be found at the link below. https://members.agu.org/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?Action=Add&ObjectKeyFrom=1A83491A-9853-4C87-86A4-F7D95601C2E2&WebCode=ProdDetailAdd&DoNotSave= |

localised plume of pollution Explanation: I believe the correct term for a "langue de pollution" is a plume of pollution.
