aplicado a uma igreja provavelmente presbiteriana nos EUA, gostaria de saber qual é o termo correto em português do brasil que não seja "missa", considerando que não se trata de uma cerimônia católica:
"She would be attending the funeral and the memorial service of this friend, although she herself had a short amount of time left."
Memorial service, segundo definição da Wikipedia, é a ceremony held in honor of the dead. The term refers to a funeral service when the body is not present, a religious service held in memory of the dead at specific intervals after the funeral, or it may refer to a public ceremony memorializing a public figure or an event in which more than one person died.
Portanto, trata-se da celebração póstuma que se faz, tradicionalmente no Brasil, ao sétimo e/ou ao trigésimo dia. Os católicos chamam de "missa de sétimo dia".
Mas como você mencionou o presbiterianismo do texto, segundo o "Manual Presbiteriano", da Igreja Presbiteriana do Brasil, não se realizam cultos em memória de falecidos. Veja a página 111 do PDF deste link http://www.ipb.org.br/download/manual_presbiteriano.pdf
Por isso sugiro "homenagem póstuma", "cerimônia póstuma" ou a combinação de ambos "cerimônia de homenagem póstuma", que é um termo adotado pela imprensa.
My point is whether (póstuma) is really necessary in the phrase, as "funeral" precedes it, and by inference, it must be at a later date. PS Yes my Velório was completely wrong as I did not pay attention to the question ;-)
henriquejorge Serviço fúnebre é um termo genérico demais para o contexto citado. A frase fala de duas cerimônias: o funeral e o memorial. Se o Rafael usar "servicó fúnebre" ele simplificará a frase, e isso nem sempre é possível/permitido.

O 'memorial service' pode acontecer no mesmo dia ou em outro após o enterro. Continuo certo de que a melhor tradução seria mesmo 'serviço fúnebre', que engloba todo e qualquer serviço, inclusive de caráter religioso', com relação ao velório, enterro etc
você está querendo dizer que o 'memorial service' acontece no mesmo dia do enterro? que não é um evento que acontece dias depois? pois eu tinha entendido que era, pelas explicações. não sendo no mesmo dia, concordo com o que o leo disse
henriquejorge, a missa de sétimo dia é apenas a forma que a Igreja Católica denomina sua cerimônia de homenagem póstuma. Não é o termo "cerimônia de homenagem póstuma" que dá a ideia de missa de sétimo dia (de falecimento), mas sim "missa de sétimo dia" que dá a ideia de uma cerimônia de homenagem póstuma.
thanks for the information, but still, using the word 'missa' to refer to a protestant service would be 'catholicizing' the vocabulary, using the catholic term instead of a broader one. no matter how similar the service is, protestant churches still have the right not to be 'catholicized' when referred to.

mas culto ou cerimônia fúnebre não pareceria estar se referindo ao enterro ou funeral em si? pelo que entendi do texto, são dois eventos separados, um sendo o próprio funeral/enterro e outro um culto em memória do finado, algo como um equivalente protestante do que é a missa de sétimo dia no catolicismo
