English term or phrase: memorial service

"She would be attending the funeral and the memorial service of this friend, although she herself had a short amount of time left."

obrigado

cerimônia de homenagem póstuma
Explanation:
Rafael

Memorial service, segundo definição da Wikipedia, é a ceremony held in honor of the dead. The term refers to a funeral service when the body is not present, a religious service held in memory of the dead at specific intervals after the funeral, or it may refer to a public ceremony memorializing a public figure or an event in which more than one person died.

Veja a página 111 do PDF deste link http://www.ipb.org.br/download/manual_presbiteriano.pdf

agree  Luis Gustavo Gentil Machado Farias: Perfeito.

homenagem funebre

Explanation:
In Brazil, we do not usually have a memorial service. That is typical of the USA, for instance, as we see in all their movies. Basically, the memorial service is when people who know the deceased say a few good words about him/her. As we see in their movies, they do that away from the corpse usually, in a separate room. It works well in several levels, I suppose. The closest thing in the Portuguese language would then be homenagem funebre, that is, we are praising the deceased at the time of the public acknowledgement of his/her death. Worth noticing that this memorial service is also something that happens after many years of the death of the individual at least sometimes. Australia gives memorial service for those who lost life in wars, for instance. Brazil also does that.

Someone wrote to me talking about Brazil having mass for the deceased. Memorial service is not a mass, as far as I know, as I have explained. It is not a religious thing. It could also be homenagem postuma, if given after the burial, after the day of the burial, I reckon. Someone wrote to me talking about funebre having to do with the burial.
As far as I know, this service happens on the day of the burial in the USA, normally away from the corpse and before the actual burial, so that people are 'better prepared' to 'send the corpse down' or others (cremation, and etc.). As we know, funebre, in Portuguese, has to do with all the events surrounding the burial, not only with the burial itself... .

--------------------------------------------------

Also: This is part of the sequence of events accompanying the burial of the corpse, not the entire event, but cerimonia is the entire event... . We wish for an expression that means that part of the cerimonia in which people who knew the deceased, or who care, say a few good words about him/her, I reckon... .
