French term or phrase: logique de la suppléance
Am not sure what this means (substitution logic?). Does it mean putting themselves in "normal" people's shoes? If so, how can I translate it - is there an accepted equivalent in psychology terminology? Many thanks

recourse to substitutes
Explanation:
I'm taking "logique" as referring to a general sort of strategy. I think "recourse to" works because it can mean "option" or "alternative" in a similar way. The additional meaning of "getting help from" seems desirable here.

I'm suggesting the plural "substitutes" rather than an abstract noun like "substitution" or "replacement" mostly because I think it's better stylistically.
