Yes, thanks for helpNikki. Mentioning "drugs" or "substances" was an issue I noticed, although I liked that idea. However, I have already weighed up issues and chosen as I had to send in translation.

So thank you everybody for your help and very interesting comments and ideas.

Marc, that thought sprung to my mind too, but it is the official term. The same problem is true from a grammatical point of view in English as in the French, with the inversion of adjective and noun of course. The list is no more prohibited in English than it is in French : the list details substances which are prohibted.

Lara, your problem is that have to stick closely to what your original says. Daryo's point is quite valid : the list does not refer uniquely to drugs but to a number of ways in which doping can occur.

So, for all the official name for the list does exist, the article does not use that name. However, the article does not restrict the description of the list to drugs alone. To state "banned drugs" would represent an erroneous traslation for that reason.

I don't know about this official English title for the list, by the way. I know in French it would not be a good title, since it's not the list itself that is prohibited, but the content of the list, thus the "Liste des interdictions" and not the "Liste interdite". Does "Prohibited List" work fine in English?

Thank you for your comments and your point Nikki about unofficial term being used. This is a difficult one though, I like "banned substances"due to this point about unofficial term, but still think that "prohibited list" matches more closely with the French. Will have to decide soon anyway.

doping is like an evolving game. Injections of steroids or hormones are "pre-historical".
Whether you use an official or unofficial expression, it has nowadays to include "methods".

doping is about unacceptable/unfair ways of winning a sport competition.
Taking various pills/injections/food supplements is only part of it.
Methods are an important part of it.
Oxygen is unlikely to ever be a banned drug or substance, but some methods of getting more oxygen are banned.
Like "blood doping".

Having just checked the French version of the source I cited yesterday, I found (obviosuly) the same one as Marc and have come to the same conclusion. This is an article and they have not used the official term in French, so there is no absolute necessity to do so in the English translation here.

L'équivalent français officiel de la Prohibited List est la "Liste des interdictions" (avec majuscule initiatle). Le texte mentionne la "liste interdite", sans majuscule. Il pourrait bien s'agir en effet de la Prohibited List, mais à moins d'en être certain, j'irais plutôt pour le terme moins officiel de "list of banned drugs" or maybe better "... of banned substances". : )
