Ciao Daniela!

[...]
The boreholes indicate that the alluvial deposit is
very thin on the right foot bank (a few metres) and on
the left margin of the watercourse (6-7 m). Going towards the centre of the river plain, the thickness of the alluvial deposit grows reaching the maximum value of approximately 25 m in the area of the left shoulder of the bridge."

"Seventy-nine metres below track level, the Makatote River has been eroding the bank that supports two of the viaduct’s concrete feet on Pier 7 (formerly known as Pier G). It is the same pier that the original contractors who built the bridge (Andersons) had trouble with 100 years ago while building the structure. The result of the erosion was that the feet were at risk of being undermined by the river.'

Eppure...
Buon lavoro!

Note to reference poster
Asker: thanks rfmoon :-) references and glossaries always useful! (it's sometimes difficult to ask for a target term if you don't know the exact meaning of the original term in its context...so starting from a description/explanation is an excellent alternative!)
