I have understood what it means from other Internet entries "rafforzando il muro anteriore delle cella mediante un “rimpello” di piccoli blocchi (ovvero dotando la vecchia struttura di un basso zoccolo addossato?)" e l'origine (Hoepli says 1 raro Coprire, rivestire di nuova pelle)
but have no idea of the English term.

Are you around, Tom (thanks to an old proz I know what scuci-cuci is!)? Any help very welcome from any architecture-restoration experts! TIA

Asker: Thanks but I don't think so as in the next paragraph they talk about "per le superfici intonacate: il consolidamento degli elementi decorativi e delle limitate porzioni ancora coese e ben aggrappate alla muratura, nonché il rifacimento di nuovi intonaci nelle restanti parti, e la successiva tinteggiatura a calce"

Asker: thanks, Shera. This looks like a very specific technique, which I am not sure is the one used. I see 'rimpello' (literally giving a new skin) used also for damaged columns etc and I think 'overlay' is a technical yet broad term which is used with wall restoration. Thanks anyhow
