that's taking it to another level Explanation: The idiomatic phrase 'vyí dívčí' is a short for 'vyí dívčí kola'. 'Vyí', i.e. 'higher' used to be a common designation for schools which followed the elementary schools in the school system. 'Dívčí kola' would be an 'all girl school'. Thus the phrase 'to u je vyí dívčí' indicates two major points: it is 'girl thing' and it is higher than where we are now and where we are expected to be. Therefore, it is 'taking it to another level'. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2003-07-19 20:53:55 (GMT) -------------------------------------------------- It is, of course, meant as an ironic statement. |

This is so childish! Explanation: vyí dívčí = vyí dívčí kola If the article mentions an adult breaking off with her best friend who she's known since their schooldays, the break up could be considered an immature thing to do ;) Something a college girl might do :) |

To u je vyí dívcí. (Ironically) It is complicated, difficult to deal with. Explanation: It is right that "vyí dívčí" is, or better used to be all girls school. But I am pretty sure they mean that it is difficult, it requires advice. Examples: (colloquial, ironical,, spoken rather than written): Vyplnit daňové přiznání? To u je vyí dívčí. This means: Fill in tax form? It is so complicated. I need advice. |
