"En este sitio de penitencia divina, adonde se resguardan las almas de los ángeles desobedientes, existen vistosos y amplios campos de rosales que se esparcen incontables, sin fin, por los campos y colinas esmeraldas de la ilusionada comarca, hasta perderse la vista en el confín de la distancia eterna, como si fueran una **lindísima sábana santa que acobija** la virgen tierra."

I wanted to modify this, because it is not about the "earth," but rather a land, or a landscape.

My original entry is here below:

The paragraph seems to be saying that pergatory (where the souls of the rebellious angels are guarded) is a beautiful place, where there are emerald hills that recede into the eternal distance as if they were a "beautiful holy veil that shrouds" the "virgin earth." [change to virgin land]

That way you could get the concept of shroud (like Shroud of Turin). I didn't think that "acobija" is mulching, but from the verb cobijar, covering, like a shroud or a blanket. The writing style is very beautiful and metaphoric.

Explanation:
Sábana santa is the English for the Turin Shroud (no holy). However, this does sound a little macabre in English. Therefore, I thought using some synonym or other would sound better.

Holy covering/cloak/veil/canopy.

Veil/virgin retains the religious imagery.

Explanation:
1) I don't think "sábana santa" here is "Holy Shroud" as such. Especially given the preceding "una lindísima".

2) "acobijar" is to "mulch" i.e. to nourish growing things.

3) "la virgen tierra" I think refers to sterile nature of the underlying illusions.

So it seems to me to be a complex image of something, normally used to wrap something dead/decaying, here being used to nourish and create life.
