elective courses/electives Explanation: The text being a transcript (histórico escolar), the courses were probably chosen (elected) by the student from amongst those offered in the local curriculum (vs the national curriculum, which stipulates required courses). With the core curriculum as a foundation and more than 80 electives to choose from, you can tailor your ... education to meet your individual needs and interests. matérias parte diversificada general education courses/subjects Explanation: uma base comum = core courses/subjects uma parte diversificada = general education courses/subjects My understanding is that the "parte diversificada" refers to that part of the curriculum that can be decided by the local authorities according to community needs and available expertise (i.e., GenEd requirements); in contrast, the core courses are required at all schools. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 16 hrs (2012-05-25 23:30:21 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Though perhaps more commonly used at the tertiary-level, another option might be "general education requirements." In the context of enhancing local control over the curriculum, it would appear to fit rather nicely. This same type of control, or freedom, is exercised at the program-level at colleges, where each program, such as a bachelor's degree in political science, might have its own general education requirements that go beyond the core requirements (which all students must meet, regardless of their program). That is, the program---or in this case, the school/district---can choose the courses deemed especially useful to promote the desired student learning outcomes (SLOs). I hope this helps! Cheers from the Northern Mariana Islands :-) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 21 hrs (2012-05-26 04:36:39 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- As for the suggestion of "free electives," in this context it's the school/district that chooses (not the students). In this context, another (less literal) option might be "general education requirements." |
