Hi there,

I would be very grateful for any help with this term, which appears in a newspaper article I am translating from Portugal into UK English.

The full sentence is:
"Encaminhou-me para cima do viaduto do Pragal, onde vi um popular a tentar, a custo, evitar que uma mulher corpulenta se atirasse para o garrafão de acesso à ponte 25 de Abril", conta o polícia."

The only translation of "garrafão" I can find refers to bottles but that doesn't make sense in the context where it is talking about access to a bridge.
