arbeitskritisch

English translation: (process-)critical

German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Aerospace / Aviation / Space / Maintenance
German term or phrase: arbeitskritisch
Context:

"An die Wartung von arbeitskritischen Maschinen werden besondere Anforderungen gestellt."

I'm a bit unsure of what precisely arbeitskritisch refers to. Does it simply mean that these machines are critical for the production process to run smoothly. I rather suspect that the lone result in linguee "Arbeitskritische Temperaturen über 26 Grad Celsius"/"Temperatures above 26 degrees Celsius which are difficult to work under"
(source: flugfeld.info) is misleading or simply not applicable here, even though it is also used in an aerospace context.

* Sentence or paragraph where the term occurs: See above
* Document type: Specifications for an RFQ for a maintenance contract
* Target audience: Aerospace contractors
* Country and dialect (source): German
* Country and dialect (target): American English

Explanation:
Your suggestion is correct, although a fault could also prevent the process from running at all.

Critical machinery - Machines that are vital to the plant or process and without which the plant or process cannot function. Machines in this category include the steam or gas turbines in a power plant, crude oil export pumps on an oil rig or the cracker in an oil refinery.

Process-critical machines are checked on failures weekly and less critical monthly.

Hello David, sorry to take so long to come back to you. The context you provided in your question led me to include the process as I understood them to be critical to the production process. If this is not the case, to what Arbeit does it refer? Perhaps operations-critical would be a suitable solution if you are not happy using critical on its own.

critically important (machinery)

Explanation:
not sure that a mention of work processes is necessary here. I would tend to think that's already assumed.

Asker: While I am sure "systems-critical" is an accepted and standard term both in aviation and engineering in general, IS it actually what is meant here by 'arbeitskritisch'?

agree  Lancashireman: Hi Marcus. Sounds a bit more relevant to IT, but if you say this is "the accepted term" and post with CL5, that's good enough for me.
