I'm translating the following sentence from an environment study.

"Jacobsen et al. (2008) analizó el problema de sensibilidad al alcance de la información aplicando un experimento de elección a ciudadanos Daneses. Ellos encontraron que los participantes fueron capaces de expresar consistentemente sus preferencias, las cuales fueron sensitivas al alcance en el número de especies preservadas."

I'm having trouble with the phrase "especies preservadas". "Preserved species" is the suggested online translation but "protected species" sounds far better. However, in Spanish, "protected species" would normally be translated as "especies protegidas".

Since "especies preservadas" only results in 5000 Google hits, I'm thinking it's a somewhat unusual phrase.

Any ideas?

Explanation:
I agree with what Toni and others have said that this text sounds a little strange and I would imagine they are simply referring to 'protected species'. You do not mention which species they are referring to or where it lives. This would also help find the most appropriate term. They could even be referring to endangered species - who knows? In any case, without further context, I think I would translate it as 'protected species'.

We should know more of the context to be sure, these authors appear to have studied the alternative Danish people would choose based on the amount of information they have; it seems to me that this paragraph implies that they tended to choose the alternative that would preserve more species (if implemented).
