agree  Rachel Douglas: "He practices karate" is fine for a specific type of martial art. For an informal option, "to do" - "he does tai chi." / Not sure. Maybe "I enjoy..." if the Q is "what's your hobby"? Otherwise it depends on the sport. "I wrestle", but "I practice karate."
