Spanish term or phrase: molcate
I'm guessing «molcate», in this context, is cornfeed for cows, but I'm not sure. I understand that it can also be a delicious dish for human consumption, as well.

A partir del tractor pude fertilizar y sacar cosechas de cuatro toneladas por hectárea, de maíz. Con tumba-roza-quema no se saca ni una. Toda esta producción era para el autoconsumo, porque era muy caro sacarla al principio. Yo vendía el maíz por ahí, el que sobraba. El molcate era para el ganado.

My rough draft is:

“[Since getting] the tractor I was able to fertilize and reap corn harvests of four tons per hectare. With slash-and-burn you can’t even reap one. All this production was for our own consumption, because it was very expensive to reap at first. I’d sell the corn over there somewhere, whatever was left. . . . »

I'll pose a separate question if the moderators object, but I'm also guessing that «tumba-roza-quema» equates to what in English is known as the "slash-and-burn" farming technique?

I'm from Missouri, but am out of my depth here. This entire chapter is about ranching.

Thanks in advance.

I almost forgot: you're Efraín Bartolomé's friend, right? Our project of translating his war diary «Ocosingo» is going very well. 4 of the chapters have been published in literary magazines, and a couple of book publishers have expressed interest in the complete manuscript. You and the proz.com community have been very helpful with low-frequency idioms and vocabulary. Thanks again, Rafael!
