French term or phrase: Mesure(s) Physique(s)
"Mesure" is more often than not written without an "s", see:
http://www-iut.ujf-grenoble.fr/mph.html (also see the link to get an idea of what the course entails)

About the IUT Le Creusot 3rd-level educational establishment:

"Savoir faire
Activité principale

Formation Universitaire et Technologique (Initiale, Continue et Alternance)
Spécialité
4 DUT : Génie Mécanique et Productique, Génie Electrique et Informatique Industrielle, ***Mesures Physiques***, Techniques de Commercialisation.
6 Licences Professionnelles : Mécatronique, Laser, Vision Artificielle, Mesures et Capteurs Intelligents, Aéronautique, Tourisme
3 DU : Energies, CFAO et DUETI"

It could just be one of those things that doesn't translate -- it's a broad industry-focussed science course basically. Anyway.

metrology

Explanation:
maybe...
http://wwwm.coventry.ac.uk/ptshortcpd/ugpt/pages/ugpt.aspx?i...
definition of metrology to be compared to
http://www.iutsd.univ-paris13.fr/mp/

and to the wikipedia definition
another IUT Mesures Physiques department...
note that Coventr-y says this is the only degree of its kind....

though, unfortunately for my suggestion "métrologie" seems to exist independent of "mesures physiques"...

agree  Bashiqa: I'm agreeing but I think it covers more than just metrology. i.e. Paint standards or electro-plating come into this sphere of activities.

-> thanks Bashiqa. Not too sure of myself here... but I find no courses in 'physical measures', except on sites translated from French; certainly metrology is very specialised...

agree  SafeTex: sounds much better as a subject than 'physical measurements''

-> thanks SafeTex :-) I tend to feel the same about a course title...
