Re the possible origin of translations based on the verb ‘to bind’, I have just learnt this verb from Hans Wehr’s Arabic dictionary:
qayyada II taqyīd = to bind, tie, fetter, shackle
muqayyad (its passive participle) = fettered, shackled, bound, tied (down)
Not forgetting:
qayd (pl. quyūd) = fetter, shackle, chain; bond, tie etc.

The reason I quote all this is that it is most reminiscent of the literal meaning of the Latin word ‘religiō’ (‘being tied back’), sadly the exact opposite of Biblical Christianity, which is a being released forward.

You all three, are right. The blame is on translator of the text. He picked up a very unpopular word for "committed". The rule is: know the translator before the translation. More comments in next issue!
