The above is a question on a patient´s sheet to be admitted as a volunteer for clinical trials for arthrosis.
What I do not understand is why "previa" is included.

Thanks for your insight, Muriel. It seems to fit in with Collins’ definition http://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/past under meaning 3 (adjective) where it says “denoting a specific unit of time that immediately precedes the present one”, i.e. if today is Feb 15 (as in your example) the past month would indeed be the whole of January.
In practice, however, I think the (mis)use of “past” is quite widespread, e.g., http://www.patient.co.uk/doctor/Living-with-Disability-and-P...
Well, I for one will try to mend my ways and change to “last”.

I'll tell you what I was taught. Let's say the question is asked on Feb 15. If you said 'last 6 months', you would count back 6 months starting in the middle of the month to Aug 15. If you said 'past six months', you would count Jan, Dec, Nov, Oct, Sept, Aug - so the question would encompass the first 2 weeks of Aug. In the case of 'past', technically, there is a gap unaccounted for between Feb 1 and Feb 15. Here it's not a big deal, but it could make a big difference in the case or years - or in calculations of pregnancy, for example.

@ Muriel. I thought last/past were interchangeable in this context. I'd be very interested to learn the difference. Could you explain it a bit or provide some references? Thanks.

You can do without it in your translation.
Have you had an arthroscopy within the last six months?
Using "previous" and "past" in the same question would be redundant.
