neutral  B D Finch: That is what is, in UK English, a "strike plate". It contains the keep, which is the bit that the latch fits into when the door is closed. On an electrically-released lock, it is the keep that opens to release the latch.

agree  Terry Richards: This is technically more correct than Martin's anser but I wonder how many non-locksmiths would know what a keep is. Given that this is an IT document, I think I would probably use latch myself even though this is more correct.

  -> I do think that most people would know the difference between a latch and a keep. It does matter which side of the contraption is electrically operated.
