Highway is a very old and obsolete word for road, and I have never seen or heard it used in modern literature or conversation. I suppose back then all roads might as well have been motorways since they were the only way of getting from lands end to bognor regis...

Thanks, I didn't realise that the meaning of 'highway' was different in US English. The Asker will need to decide which version of English he wants. In British EN, a 'highway' is any road open for free public use. Dick Turpin was a highwayman because he robbed people on the King's highway and it definitely didn't have separate carriageways, central reservations, tollbooths or any of the other stuff you associate with 'autoroutes'/motorways, which are strictly out of bounds to horses, even Black Bess.

Les Britanniques et les Américains n'utilisent pas les mêmes termes pour désigner les différents types de routes.

En Grande-Bretagne, les routes nationales sont des « A-roads » ou « trunk roads », les routes secondaires des « B-roads ».

Dans la première catégorie, certaines sont des quatre voies séparées par un terre-plein central : elles portent alors le nom de « dual carriageways » (le terme américain équivalent est « divided highways »).
