"Identifying" might be a solution here. But I think that the other answer - "highlighting" works as well, as would "distinguishing," "pinpointing," and maybe even "defining," although that would be a bit more vague.

we often use this term in academic research, such as in 'teasing out the implications of' as well as all the imagery associated with weaving, unraveling etc and bringing to light. But in your context, what they mean by degageant is really this idea of puliing out one idea from a vague or messy/unclear mass of other ideas or facts. Highlighting could also work, but it is a slightly idfferent nuance.
