In answer to SJLD's query about whether an experience can manifest itself, I would pose the similar question: can depression manifest itself? I think that the word "experience" is vital because it takes the discourse beyond the clinical diagnostic category of "depression" to the personal aspect of what it is like to experience it and how that personal experience reveals itself to an observer.

  -> Thank you Allistair.

disagree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: Sorry, but "vécu" is best described by 'experience'. See my comment to BD Finch.// I was expecting this remark! Yes it is ongoing but the vécu never the less describes previous experience.

  -> "souvent" contradicts "experience" because it still going on Nikki./ Which is why living with much better fits in than experience which is understood as the past.

agree  Nikki Scott-Despaigne: "Vécu" is used to describe experience. It cannot have a present sense of 'living with'.//"Souvent" fits no bother : "Experience of depression is often expressed..."//Still for this 1 as essential to convey intention of the original 'vécu', experience IMO.
1 hr
  -> Thanks Nikki. My suggested wording was to avoid putting "experience" and "expressed" in the same sentence, for reasons of style.

neutral  Drmanu49: Disagree with Nikki's statement in this case. "souvent" would not fit in otherwise.
2 hrs
  -> I don't understand your comment about "souvent".

  -> Thanks Dr L

neutral  SJLD: can an experience manifest itself? sounds weird/that's why I think the word "experience" is redundant.
2 hrs
  -> Yes, it is the fact that the person concerned is experiencing depression and this manifests itself in various ways. Otherwise another person's experience would be unknowable, unless they were able to and chose to describe it./See added note above.

neutral  Andrew Bramhall: @SJLD- Yes, experiences can manifest themselves, or make themselves manifest, it's just a turn of phrase, but it is correct.
