steers clear of heart-rending themes Explanation: I'm trying to stick to the same register. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs (2011-12-11 18:58:58 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- To Ormiston: Hi, that’s not a quibble, that’s possibly a serious and fair objection - but in my view it’s an objection to the source text, not to its translation. The author says "no plantea cuestiones patéticas"; and the way I translated it is - to rephrase it - that he or she avoids "lo patético". Patético is a pretty strong term in the literary register, so I chose “heart-rending"; and as for avoiding "themes", that doesn’t mean that he's leaving out passages but only that he chooses not to bring out certain qualities in the piece that may or may not be brought out by a particular pianist's rendition. (Of course, we ARE often tempted to give in to the urge to „correct“ the author and give a gentle nudge to his words, often to see them fall over the edge of the precipice called interpretation ;-), but I hope I’m not guilty of that here :). |
