It is far from clear that traditional theory assumes a static organization of mind. Indeed,
a basic rationale for the blank-screen role of the analyst rests on the assumption that the
patient’s mind (and the association he or she produces) is anything but static and would all
too easily be influenced by the analyst (i.e., would be too subject to suggestion) were the
latter not to take a blank-screen stance. Also, although traditional theory may posit certain
stable and inherent structures and motives (e.g., drives and drive gratification, defenses,
confl icts), it hardly follows that mind is characterized as having a static organization.
Indeed, the interplay of and compromises among different forces, motives, and structure
of the mind, as well as what is elicited by different meanings of interactional situations
(e.g., oedipal fantasies, fear of or opposition to authority), suggest anything but a static
organization of mind. It seems to me that the criticism that traditional theory posits a static
organization of mind is somewhat of a straw man.
