Emballages : tout produit constitué de matériaux de toute nature, destiné à contenir et à protéger des marchandises données, allant des matières premières aux produits finis, à permettre leur manutention et leur acheminement du producteur au consommateur ou à l'utilisateur, et à assurer leur présentation (Directive UE 94/62/EC)
***Emballage assimilé***: tout autre produit qui peut être utilisé pour protéger ou transformer des boissons ou des aliments chez le consommateur (par exemple des feuilles ou des barquettes en aluminium) ou encore tout autre produit utilisable pour le conditionnement, la protection, la manutention, la distribution, la présentation et la préparation de marchandise chez le consommateur (par exemple les capsules de café).

I am looking for the best translation for this term. I know it has been translated as 'assimilated packaging' in some EU documents, but I am not sure this is correct. It does not seem to be widely used in any case.

Asker: Thanks for your help, Liz. I'm not sure that this is what the term means in my context. The normal translation of 'assimilé' does not apply here, I have been told. By the way, I am a bit puzzled by philgoddard's remark - as far as I am aware, we have not had this term before on proz.com. If we have, I have not seen the question. Thanks again! Sheila

"emballage assimilé" is the packaging material that we normaly don't see (foam, bubble wrap, paper, plastic bag) until we open the box. the box is the outer packaging material or "les emballages"
