it COULD be to stop the whole engine, rather than just the shaft, from rolling backwards, but might that not be "cale anti-recul"? Without knowing exactly what it does, it's very difficult to be sure.

Could cale possible be "stop" (or indeed blocks) to prevent the engine from rolling backwards during maintenance operations? Thanks for your input, much appreciated, Susan

If this is a tool of some sort, it might be nothing more than a glorified 'crowbar' used to split engine from gearbox for example. Don't know whether this is likely to help or hinder.

There is such a thing used in gas turbine engines (which all but the smallest helicopters use) as a "locking plate". However, as far as I can tell, this is to prevent the blades falling out, rather than to prevent the rotor from turning. "Rotor/shaft lock" might work.

You're right Tony, there are no other clues in the document (I've waded through it). This list of tools is a little aside, and there are no pictures either! So I can't help with context of use, nor size. All I know is that "cale" is considered to be a tool and I also assume that it is to help shift the engine backwards ... Sorry I can't give you any more info, Susan
