basic policy Explanation: It may be this simple. "Sockel" when used as a prefix tends to mean "basic". To be more certain about whether this would fit, I'd really need to see the word used in a sentence or two in your document, if possible. |

Soapbox politics Explanation: A Sockel is a base, a pedestal. So the term conjures up images of someone standing on a soapbox. |

a policy focused on lump sum pay rises Explanation: I am not sure, but what I think they mean with "Sockelpolitik" is "eine auf Anhebung der Sockelgehälter abzielende Politik", which you should therefore translate as "a policy focused on lump sum pay rises". The word "Sockel", when used in connection with "Politik", is always related to salaries and wages, I think. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 2003-06-11 14:35:11 (GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Other options would be: \"a policy of lump sum pay rises\" \"demands for a lump sum increase of salaries\" \"demands for an increase of basic salaries\" Reference: http://www.google.de/search?as_q=&num=10&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&oe=U... |

policy of base or basic wages Explanation: Policy of base wages. Sockelbetrag = base amount. That´s what should fit your context if talking about unions. |
