Medical - Medical (general)
Portuguese term or phrase: enquanto vivos (no mínimo 12 meses)
This is regarding a medical study.

“Após a descontinuação do tratamento todos os pacientes serão acompanhados quanto a sobrevida em intervalos regulares programados a cada 2 meses enquanto vivos (no mínimo 12 meses) ou até o final do estudo (aproximadamente 27 meses).”

I’m not sure about a few things in this sentence – acompanhados, quanto a sobrevida, enquanto vivos, no minimo 12 meses.

My biggest question is about how no minimo 12 meses fits in there? They will continue to receive follow-up care at regularly scheduled intervals, every 2 months, for as long as they are alive (at least 12 months)…?? What if they die after 5 months? Can anyone help with this? Thank you.

for the rest of their life/lives (for at least 12 months)

Explanation:
This is a kinder way of putting it. Anything else implies that you expect the patient to die. It gets away from the mindset that the patient is doomed.

Strict grammarians will say 'for the rest of their lives', but it's becoming commonplace to say 'their life'. 49,800,000 hits for "their life".

My companion's oncologist said to him: "You and I are going to be seeing each other for the rest of our lives." Here, of course, there's no doubt that two lives are in question. My point in quoting him is that he doesn't imply that the patient is going to die first.

every two months (during a minimum of 12 months) or until the end of the study

Explanation:
"quanto a sobrevida" makes "enquanto vivos" totally unnecessary and it can be left out

a cada 2 meses enquanto vivos (no mínimo 12 meses) ou até o final do estudo => every two months (during a minimum of 12 months) or until the end of the study
