| working the line llegar al límite Explanation: ¿Por se puso a este proyecto el título "Working the Line"? Claro, "line" es la frontera, y "working" sugiere no sólo el trabajo que realizó el artista sino, tal vez, "working your way along", recorrer la "línea" poco a poco, de monumento en monumento. Pero como suele ocurrir en este tipo de títulos, también sugiere otros posibles sentidos. Por ejemplo, "work the line" puede ser trabajar en una fábrica, en una cadena de producción: "currárselo", como se dice en España. A mí me recuerda también lo de Johnny Cash: "I walk the line": lealtad, compromiso. No quiero decir que estos sentido deban ni puedan reproducirse en la traducción. Ni siquiera me parecen especialmente relevantes en sí. Sólo quiero decir que el título inglés sugiere una cierta polisemia, y que esto es lo que hace que tenga, o parezca tener, algo de color, algo de chispa, que no sea escueto y puramente descriptivo. Partiendo de esta idea, me parece que conviene buscar un título español que tenga, a su vez, una cierta polisemia. Tratándose de un proyecto sobre la frontera, creo que "límite" es la palabra adecuada, mejor que "línea". "Frontera" valdría, pero "límite" da más juego. "Llegar al límite", obviamente, puede interpretarse literalmente --llegar a la frontera entre ambos países-- y metafóricamente, llegar hasta el final, y también llegar a un extremo, a una situación extrema. Evidentemente, no traduce "working", pero ofrece otros matices en su lugar. Prefiero el infinitivo; la tendencia casi obsesiva de utilizar el gerundio el títulos ingleses se imita a menudo en español, pero a mi modo de ver queda menos natural que en inglés. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 13 hrs (2011-09-27 06:44:37 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- The extra context requires a rethink, and probably forces us to look for a literal solution. Clearly we need a "work" part and a "line" part that work both separately and together. I'd be inclined to adapt my original idea and put Trabajar en el límite, which gives us both "trabajo" and "límite" and also a phrase which means both and also something more: "trabajar en condiciones extremas", "trabajar en el límite de nuestras posibilidades", as well as "trabajar en el límite entre dos mundos". The work, I still think, could be both the artist's work and that of the border patrols. |
