French term or phrase: liste à étage
Elles sont sous forme de liste déroulante, par exemple avec le bouton Police (Font).
Elles peuvent aussi prendre l’apparence de liste à étage comme le bouton Style (style).

Task pane
Explanation:
I have a (US) English version of Word. When you select "styles and formatting", a panel opens on the right side of the window. At the top of this panel there is a drop down list that currently says "styles and formatting" but can be used to select other panels (help, search results, clip art...).

If you put the mouse cursor over this control, the tool tip says "Other task panes".

Since I posted this we have been informed that it is Word 2010 which, I'm fairly sure, uses a different way of displaying styles. Thus my confidence level is even lower now.

Sorry for the confusion, all, you all know how it is when we get bogged down in confusing terminology in long documents written by several individuals, each with his own style... but anyway, working with me and what I gave you, you helped me, and ultimately the client. Thanks again.

multilevel list

Explanation:
Pretty sure that this is what is meant.
I use a Mac computer so I use Office 2011 not 2010, but this is the term used in Word.

  -> thank you John

neutral  cc in nyc: Your references prove that multilevel lists can be created in Word, not that the term is used for Word 2010's "style" feature. :-( // The absence of "list à étage" is not good evidence for equating it with "liste à plusieurs niveaux."
7 hrs
-> when you look at Word's style feature no particular term is used other than 'list'! ie "liste à étage" does not appear//I have a visual idea of what "liste à étage" is (see tinyurl link), and IF it is this, this is called a multilevel list in MS Word.

agree  cc in nyc: Sounds like you're not using Word 2010. Plus, "volet office/volet des tâches" is commonly used in French for "task pane." [Sorry for the back-and-forth :o] // Yes, based on new context info. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa942864.aspx

-> Yes, I'm using Word 2007. IN my defence, the fact that it's 2010 is new information since I posted this.

Staged lists are not specific to Word 2010 (which I don't have on my PC). They have been around at least since Office 2000. And they are not specific to MS products.

'staged' refers to the fact that when you open a drop-down menu, the options you use most often appear at once; but if you wait a moment (or click at the bottom of the list) it opens out fully to show all the options (with the most-used and less-used ones having different background colours).

This quote from the "fuller context posted at 15:21 today:

"Elles peuvent aussi prendre l’apparence de liste à étage comme le bouton Style (style).
Dans ce dernier cas, le bouton Autres (More Arrow) permet d’afficher les choix."

seems to tally with my last note here (at 14 hours...).

Not much help, except to show how Microsoft typically describes styles in Word 2010.
