French term or phrase: Doubles poneys
Hello,
Any horse experts out there? This comes from tourist material for the Champagne region and here is talking about a riding school. I'm not sure if the category "double poney" exists in English, apparently they are horses such as Haflinger, Welsh cob and Fjord which I assume are somewhere between a pony and horse in height. Any help much appreciated.
L'école d'équitation s'adresse à un large public de 3 à 93 ans et permet de monter des shetlands, des doubles poneys et des chevaux.

Explanation:
For me they are just "poneys", as distinct from "Shetland poneys" or "Shetlands" (in context), as explained previously here:

LE DOUBLE PONEY N'EXISTE PAS VRAIMENT c'est surtout un terme pour qualifier les poneys de grandes tailles.

tu as le haflinger, le fjord, le welsh cob, le connemara, le fell, l'highland, le konik, le gotland.... enfin voila pour les poneys de grandes tailles, ensuite tu as des chevaux de petites tailles style camarguais, merens...

Of ponies, one site (probably worth a fuller read) says :

As a generalisation it can not be based on height or conformation, pony type or temperament, but is a subtle combination of the lot, with different breeds having their own particular characteristics.

With the exception of Falabellas, miniatures under seven hands developed in the Buenos Aires province, Shetlands are the smallest ponies in the world

agree  Vaddy Peters: may be they are harnessed in two, three, four?

neutral  Gabrielle Leyden: They're large ponies (just below the horse cut-off), but in this case "ponies" will do.

neutral  Tony M: Err, isn't that 'ponies'? As Gabrielle says, as distinct from the 'miniatures'

(larger) ponies and cobs

Explanation:
In English anything under 14.2 hands is a pony and anything over is a horse. Welsh cobs and Haflingers both have a minimum breed height of 13.2 hands but can be well over 14.2 hands, so some are ponies and some are horses. Cobs, even large ones have the conformation of a broad-backed, large-boned pony.

So, I think that the only way to cover this in English is to mention both ponies and cobs, as a cob can be an adult ride, even if less than 14.2.
