Russian term or phrase: аттестат о среднем образовании
Выданный в советские времена, перевод требуется для предъявления в США.

Общепринятые варианты перевода сводятся к двум - high school diploma и secondary education certificate.
Какой же все-таки лучше передает смысл? Я склоняюсь к secondary education certificate, потому что diploma в моем понимании - это диплом о высшем образовании, а бумажка об окончании школы - это certificate. К тому же советская средняя школа для меня - secondary education.

Кто как переводит, поделитесь опытом, пожалуйста.

Explanation:
Secondary school - понятие довольно расплывчатое, так же как и Diploma or Certificate (См. ссылки). A diploma (from Greek δίπλωµα. díplōma, meaning "folded paper") is a certificate (См. ссылку 2).
Поэтому Ваш перевод - дело вкуса. Другое дело - нужно ли клиенту, что бы этот документ об образовании имел юридическую силу. Заверение нотариусом подтверждает только то, что он видел и заверил Вашу подпись, но не подлинность документа. В США несколько университетов имеют юридическую силу в Foreign Diploma Verification. (Сделайте розыск по Google). Если учебное заведение находится в списке признаных в США, то документ об образовании (уже имеющий адекватное наименавание по реестру США) будет запрошен, переведён и отправлен employer напрямую (клиент получит копию). Это делается во избежании фальсификации. Если же учебное заведение не в списке - перевод его документа об образовании юридической силы еметь не будет.

For the US, that's exactly what it is. And yes, “diploma“. Не мудрствуйте лукаво! :)

Google-schmoogle and Latin etymology notwithstanding, before I became senior enough to avoid such chores, I sat on examination and evaluation commissions in three different Canadian universities (same thing as the US as far as terminology is concernd)... and that's what we called them: high–school diplomasNo matter where they came from and whether or not we considered them adequate for university admittance. High-school Graduation Certificate is a different thing – a "spravka" containing your graduation exams marks and, sometimes, a statement that you were actually awarded a diploma.

Вот именно. Когда переводите НА русский, пытаетесь выбрать вариант наиболее подходящий для русского читателя, а когда на американский - американского.
Здесь Вы переводите на американский английский, а выбранный Вами вариант - калька русского.
Конечно, все это - чисто академический вопрос: поймут и так.
Но стандартный и давно уже всеми принятый перевод - именно high-school diploma.

Asker: Михаил, ваш ответ очень грамотный и по существу правильный. Однако, позвольте мне остаться при своем мнении. Ведь каждый имеет право на собственное мнение, не так ли? Так вот, моё мнение, что всё-таки не стоит переносить советскии реалии на зарубежную почву и подгонять их под западные стандарты. Точно также при переводе кандидатских удостоверений мы пишем Candidate of Science, а не заменяем на Ph.D или другой эквивалент. Разные страны - разные системы образования и по-моему здесь (в Америке) это понимают.
