Thank you all for your input. Phil, the sentence after this one is 'Zur Zeit läuft das sog. Zwischenverfahren, in dem das Gericht prüft, ob die Anklage zur Hauptverhandlung zugelassen wird', but it is not clear to me that this sheds any light on Nebenbeteiligung here. Both the terms suggested make sense to me in this context. I think my best option is to ask the client precisely what is going on here and then choose the term.

It is difficult to really tell here without more context... it looks as if the public prosecutor applied to have xxx joined on the indictment. From previous experience of translation of such cases, it could be that a corporate defendant is being added to the indictment.

I initially agreed with Kim's answer, but then I thought Ellen might have a point. Are they asking the court to find them guilty of aiding and abetting, or merely to order them to stand trial along with other accused parties?
