L’habitabilité ne se joue pas que sur le pont : pour augmenter l’espace intérieur, une mezzanine a été conçue.

I'm having difficulty getting my head round this one.
I keep looking at it and my mind seems to be blank - translator's block I think!
Any help would be appreciated.

spaciousness is not just restricted to the deck

The boat isn't just spacious above deck - or perhaps

This one was what I chose in the end, although in other contexts Graham's idea would be just as good.

living space

Explanation:
There's only so much you can to do on deck to increase living space which is why we've added a mezzanine to the design

agree  kashew: My reaction too. Whole sentence seems good. Maybe J de M's "spaciousness" is slightly better - covers living and working areas?

agree  Jack Dunwell: Curious. I thought that the deck was where the action was as in "clear the decks" "Mezzanine" sounds more like an office block?

agree  Najib Aloui: "habitabilité" is not any sort of "spaciousness" , "interior spaciousness" perhaps? By the way, "restricted" preceded by "just" is correct?/ I am pointing to a pleonasm.

-> Thanks Najib. Bearing in mind that this mentions the deck, "interior spaciousness" or "living space" may not fit so well. / Emphasis

Livability/habitability is limited to the deck

Explanation:
Livability is limited to the deck, therefore we have designed a mezzanine to increase the interior living space.

the binnacle is limited on the deck

Explanation:
The dwelling place or space on a boat is named the binnacle. In a dictionary, I found that binnacle in English is in nautical language the equivalent for French habitacle.

disagree  Clive Phillips: A binnacle is a receptacle for a ship's compass.

-> ...and for dwelling-place. Larousse, Dictionaire moderne francais-anglais/anglais-francais, Marguerite-Marie DUBOIS, Paris, 1960. In my dict. En-Ro, of Romanian Academy, 1974, binnacle it is habitacle and also the compass support.

disagree  Martin Cassell: habitacle is nothing to do with this question. also "pas que": "NOT only" (not "only") /// I think you have misread habitABILITÉ as habitACLE ; you have also misunderstood the grammar of "pas que".

  -> Habitabilite n'est pas la capacite d'habitation?

disagree  Yvonne Gallagher: sorry, but completely wrong
