A gold mining operation with agitated cyanidation circuits requires a particle size as fine as 80% passing 75 microns and the performance of the primary grind circuit is vital to produce the particle size. For this reason the liberation of gold bearing minerals is produced during the comminution process. Nevertheless, there are some particles that need more liberation and it is important to determine the effect of the particle size distribution on the dissolution of the finer gold particles. Also, it is important to determine the minimum requirement of size reduction to separate free gold and gold bearing minerals from quartz.
The basic steps of the metallurgical methods are to crush the material to minus 10 mesh (1.7 mm), homogenize and split. The cyanidation is evaluated at different sizes, samples are split into size fractions and the leaching tests comprise cyanidation, leaching acid with sulphuric acid and nitric acid prior to cyanidation. The first cyanidation will dissolve most free gold particles, the second cyanidation will dissolved gold particles associated with soluble minerals in sulphuric acid and the third cyanidation will dissolve gold particles associated with pyrite. The final leaching residue is the gold locked in quartz. The procedure is a sequential cyanidation after eliminating interferences. The interference related to these acid soluble minerals if they are recovered in a primary concentration such as flotation, significantly coarser grinds are possible and the small weight of concentrate can be treated by intensive cyanidation to release gold from the gold bearing minerals and locked particles.
This is a useful tool employed to optimize primary grind product and the effect of some impurities present in the material. Since the comminution circuit is the main power consumer, the cyanidation circuit must try to optimize operating parameters in order to reduce costs and have a better control of the operation.
