Der Text beschaeftigt sich mit Poelzigs Festspielhaus Salzburg:

Im modernen Bauen finden sich Projekte wie das Totaltheater von Walter Gropius, die Ringbühne von Oskar Strnad, die Raumbühnen Friedrich Kieslers, der Theaterkrater von Norman Bel Geddes ... . Bei diesen Projekten sollten hochtechnische Apparaturen komplizierte Verwandlungen der Szene ermöglichen und „das Publikum in seiner intellektbetonten Apathie“ (Gropius) aufrütteln und überrumpeln. Poelzig hätte solche Lösungen nicht gewählt. Für ihn hatte die Technik hinter der Kunst zurückzustehen. Aber das Theater der Überwältigung beschäftigte auch ihn weiterhin.

Soweit ich verstanden habe, bezieht sich der Ausdruck 'Überwältigung' auf die Reaktionen, die die technischen Effekte auf die Zuschauer bewirken, vielleicht 'Teatro dello sconvolgimento (sensoriale)' o 'del rapimento'?
