English term or phrase: blue, metal detective
Dear all,

I am translating a text on safety at work at a bakery. One of the instructions sepecifies what to do in case a work has an open wound.

The text reads:

Use available medical supplies to cover any open wounds, etc. Clean, dry and use (blue, metal detective) leak proof bandage; wear blue disposable gloves over bandages on hands.

My translation:

10) Utilizar suministros médicos para cubrir toda herida abierta, etc. Limpiar, secar y utilizar apósitos impermeables (XXXXXXXXXXXXXX). Utilizar guantes descartables sobre los apósitos.

I can't understand what "blue., metal detective" may mean in relation to a bandage. Does it have to be blue and contain some metal so as to be "detected". It doesn't make sense or I'm still too sleepy.

Thanks for your help!

azul (de metal) detectable
Explanation:
This is the expression used in the Spanish AENOR safety standards for those working in the food industry:

"6.1 Higiene del Personal - zonas de manipulación de materias primas, preparación, procesado, envasado y almacenamiento"
6.1.3 (B)
Todos los cortes y rozaduras en la piel al descubierto deben cubrirse con una tirita azul de metal detectable facilitada por la Empresa."

"Detective" is a sure sign of machine translation in this context: here's another example from our old friends alibaba.com:
"Metal detecting machine packaging is suitable for metal detective the foodstuff, medicine, flavoring, health care products"
http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/metal-detection-for-food.htm...

Meirs is right: this is to do with metal detectors.

The rules demand blue metal-detectable dressings for food-handlers because of the risk of the dressing coming off and getting into the food. Blue makes it easiest to spot (since food is rarely blue) and metal-detectable means you'll find it by passing the bread or whatever through a metal detector (as advertised for this very purpose in the alibaba page cited above):

"Why Blue Plasters?
It gives high visibility amongst food. Blue is the colour that does not naturally occur often. [...]
Why Metal Detectable Plasters?
To detect contamination in cans and foil packaging as well as cartons, trays etc."

In practice, this type of dressing is usually called just "azul detectable" in Spanish:

See this website: http://www.tellusmed.com/bandage-products-bluemetal.htm.

If one of these bandages falls off someone's hands, for example, it can easily be found by a metal detector.
