As a result, when experiencing distress children may fail to signal directly a need for support, become embroiled in negative emotion, and be unable to draw upon potentially supportive social relationships. For individuals with histories of disorganized attachment relationships, processes of regulation and the integration of behavioral and emotional states may have been disrupted by extremely harsh or chaotic caregiving contexts (Carlson & Sroufe).
