English term or phrase: cut the law short
The saints have no confidence in man's externals. I call those things so, which God never made duty, but men make them so. These are not only "vain confidence", but vain worship and service, that "is loathsome to God" (cf. Matt. XV. 9). Men are apt to ***cut the law short enough*** "as it is found in the Word, but men's nature has a wonderful itching after "making additions of their own" to it. Hence a cloud of superstition has darkened some churches, and the simplicity of gospel-worship is despised. Men's inventions are brought in upon, yea, instead of divine institutions!

Explanation:
My interpretation is based on the final sentence where she says "Men's inventions are brought in upon, yea, instead of divine institutions!" So, in my interpretation, she's referring to more than just reducing the Law to a bare minimum, it also means additions. It sounds like Ellen G. White.
