World map showing % of children under height for age
Children and a nurse attendant at a Nigerian orphanage in the late 1960’s CDC/Dr. Lyle Conrad Notice four of the children with gray-blond hair, a symptom of the protein-deficiency disease kwashiorkor. Kwashiorkor sufferers, i.e., inadequate dietary protein intake, also show signs of thinning hair or “Flag Sign”, edema, inadequate growth, and weight loss. If started in time, improving calorie and protein intake will correct kwashiorkor, however growth is still stunted.

Stunted growth is a reduced growth rate in human development. It is a primary manifestation of malnutrition in early childhood, including malnutrition during fetal development brought on by the malnourished mother. In developing countries, stunted growth is a common problem affecting a large percentage of children. Once established, stunting and its effects typically become permanent. Stunted children may never regain the height lost as a result of stunting, and most children will never gain the corresponding body weight. It also leads to premature death later in life because vital organs never fully develop during childhood.
