Sometimes an apparent contradiction is known as a paradox.

By ‘apparent contradiction’ I mean something which only seems to be a contradiction (usually because it's very subtle) – in reality it isn’t a contradiction at all: in fact, from a logical point of view it is completely sound and correct.
