In this set of electrical specifications, there are several mentions of this in various situations; it is abundantly clear what the intended meaning is, but I'm darned if I can think how to say this in EN.

It's a little difficult to give examples, for reasons of confidentiality, but in any case, the surrounding detail is largely irrelevant.

"La rénovation du système de [type of system] n’est pas comprise dans ce projet. L’entreprise titulaire du présent lot mettra en place les mesures conservatoires nécessaires à la mise en œuvre du système de [type of system] après la réalisation du présent projet.
Ces mesures conservatoires consistent :
- Mise en place de fourreaux aiguillés pour la pose des [system components], des [another system component], ........." and the list goes on.

Clearly, they are referring to installing certain things now, in advance of future additional work (not covered by the present call for tenders); this is mentioned quite distinctly from the idea of things in 'attente' (see previous KudoZ questions in the archives), which is used where things are pre-installed by one trade ready for subsequent installation of something else by another trade — but all as part of the same project.

I found one entry in a personal glossary for this ('protective measure'), but that simply wouldn't apply in my context. Neither, of course, are these truly 'conservatory measures' — they are just looking ahead to the future.

While I carry on racking my brains about this one, could anyone please suggest the 'standard' industry term (for surely one must exist?) for this kind of service?

Thanks a lot for those helpful comments; that's indeed certainly how I would normally understand the term. Given that overall my document is rather unevenly written, I can't help thinking that the term is being used rather incorrectly here; it may also be some company-specific usage.

You could argue that the literal meaning of "provisional" is "looking ahead", but you might not get away with it given that the meaning has evolved so far. "Anticipatory" might do it, or "forward planning" could be worked in somehow, or eg "shall plan ahead with/ anticipate such measures as are necessary blah blah..."

Asker: Thanks, J, but I'm afraid it wouldn't fit here. You see, there's really nothing 'protective' about this — it would be different if it were, for example, wrapping cables in plastic sheeting to protect them during plastering. But here, this is purely a question of putting thiings in place for future use, presumbly, to avoid more disruptive work later.
