French term or phrase: couple de levée
This is for a glossary on 17th and 18th century shipbuilding.

The definition of the term in French is "Les couples de levée sont nommés ainsi parce qu’ils sont les premiers placés sur la quille." > "These frames were so called because they were the first to be placed on the keel."

I'm thinking "frames" for "couple" but it's a word that has proved problematic. As it occurs elsewhere, here are other terms and definitions that I've already established containing "couple":

Couple de remplissage "Les couples de remplissage sont placés entre les couples de levées." > Filling timbers (placed between the *...frames*)

Maître couple "Ces deux couples déterminent la forme et donc le volume final du navire." > Beam "These two frames determine the shape and therefore the final volume of the ship."

Couple de lof "Couples identiques placés l’un à l’avant, l’autre à l’arrière du maître couple." > Loof-frames "Identical frames, placed fore and aft of the beam."

A visual of this term is available. See "Virtual construction de la Belle" at the following virtual exhibition:

Any help from my knowledgeable shipmates would be welcome! TIA!
