English translation: needs to work harder/to apply him/herself

French term or phrase: doit se ressaisir
Handwritten notes by counselor on "bulletin de notes" on a student noted as "très inssuffisant." I know literally this indicates "need to pull it together" or "strengthen oneself" in a sense, but could this also be interpreted as "redoubler", in other words, "need to repeat the year"??
