Hi guys,

An on-line dictionary says "poker" means "devil" . As far as I know (from my researches) poker has basically two meanings: 1. the card game, 2. metal rod for stirring fire.

Anything to do with devil?

Thanks, a lot.

  • old poker; Old Poker. The devil: coll: 1784, Walpole, 'As if old Poker was coming to take them away '. Perhaps 'he who pokes', but more prob. poker = hobgoblin, demon (cf. Puck, and Irish pooka):

pokker the deuce, devil, a hobgoblin, bugbear and puck; fire hook, salamander, poker game etc.

Explanation:
If I understand you well, you want to know whether the poker has anything to do with a devil. Sure thing! Beside the stated meanings, the poker means any imagined frightful object, especially one supposed to haunt the darkness; a bugbear, pokker the deuce, devil, also a hobgoblin, bugbear and puck... Hope this helps.
