Hollow-stem augers are a form of continuous flight auger, in which the continuous helix is attached to a hollow central shaft. The drill head is formed of two pieces, the circular outer head and the inner pilot or central bit, which is fixed on a plug on the hollow shaft and can be withdrawn through the centre of the auger up to the surface.
