Explanation:
I agree with what someone else said about context. This phrase is possible in a broad sense that at the moment, there is a fire burning somewhere (at the speaker's location) in a controlled situation (such as a wood or coal stove). It's also speaker-neutral and can be used in a variety of ways: I got the fire going, etc.

Make a fire and start a fire are absolutely fine if it is out in the wilderness somewhere or outside (start a fire can also be used inside for a fireplace).

And yes, I believe some Americans still do have fireplaces:)

If anything it would be definite article "light the fire every day," as it's something that is frequently done. But yes this is correct, too.
