Japanese to English translations [PRO]
Marketing - Business/Commerce (general)
Japanese term or phrase: 磁石商品
「磁石商品を置けば回遊性もバツグン」
「店の奥や2階にマグネット(磁石)商品と呼ばれるお客が興味を引くような商品を置き、足を進めさせます」

This is part of the "I know what it is, but I don't have a good word" series, lol. This is regarding product placement. 磁石商品 are products that are placed in a store that bring customer attention, in hopes that they will look at other products.

Is there a applicable marketing term for this? I've already tried "magnetic products", but as expected, I get a bunch of literal magnetic products (stick on your fridge stuff).

English translation:customer-attracting items / customer-attracting merchandise
Explanation:
I feel that it can be translated as "customer-attracting items" since these are items in the store that are made to attract customers "like a magnet" to that back area on the 2nd floor.

There are many websites about items or retail displays, etc. displayed to attract customers.

Going with this one because it's closest to that what a 磁石商品 is and simply defines it. Although I think some of the other answers work as well.

eye-catching products / loss leaders

Explanation:
"Eye-catching products" strikes me as a good umbrella term for products that, for whatever reason, catch the attention of passersby and draw them into the store.
See page 10 of the following PDF: http://www.modasaloninteriors.com/pdf/september.pdf

"Loss leaders" would be a good way to describe products that are deeply discounted (to the point of generating a loss for the store) in order to draw people in and get them to buy products with higher profit margins.

sought-after merchandise

Explanation:
I have seen "magnetic" being used to mean attractive, but I didn't know 磁石 was also used to attract people.

If you don't come across a marketing vocabulary, what about "sought-after?" I would agree with "eye-catching" if they are displayed at the store front. But in this case customers have to know without seeing them.

Captivating merchandise / Key merchandise

Explanation:
'Magnetic Merchandise' can be anything depending on the type of retail outlet. It could be promotional/seasonal/discounted/popular/daily necessities (i.e. for convenience stores) merchandise that attracts and holds shoppers attention, needs and interest. Therefore, I feel it can be translated into either captivating or key merchandise in this case.
