Enzima de restrição: Enzimas que reconhecem sítios específicos no DNA fita dupla (em geral palíndromos) e cortam a dupla fita, formando extremidades abruptas (cegas) ou desencontradas (ou coesivas). Quando uma enzima de restrição digere o DNA, ela produz um corte em cada fita, podendo resultar em extremidades colantes ou adesivas, como as geradas pelas enzimas acima, ou extremidades cegas, isto é, sem bases despareadas. Dois exemplos seguem abaixo.
