rubber-tyred wheels Explanation: A rubber-tyred metro is a form of rapid transit system that uses a mix of road and rail technology. The vehicles have wheels with rubber tyres which run on rolling pads inside guide bars for traction, as well as traditional railway steel wheels with deep flanges on steel tracks for guidance through conventional switches as well as guidance in case a tyre fails. Most rubber-tyred trains are purpose-built and designed for the system on which they operate. Guided buses are sometimes referred to as 'trams on tyres', and compared to rubber-tyred metros. See also rubber-tyred trams, Translohr, and Bombardier Guided Light Transit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubber-tyred_metro Presumably 'rubber-tired wheels' for AE (tired of using rubber?) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 44 mins (2011-01-07 01:15:26 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- The Montréal Métro (French: Métro de Montréal) is a rubber-tired metro system, and the main form of public transportation underground in the city of Montréal, Québec. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montreal_Metro Plenty of other similar references in AE, mainly without the hyphen, of course (rubber tired wheels) -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr (2011-01-07 01:58:08 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- Two further alternatives that Google quite well: - rubber-shod wheels (avoids the BE/AE spelling dilemma) - wheels with solid rubber tyres/tires (as opposed to 'pneumatic') |
