La pregunta que has planteado es difícil de verdad, primero por la interpretación y luego por la necesaria adaptación al español para que la traducción sea comprensible. No soy experto en Chesterton, pero a pesar de ello tengo una interpretación que difiere de la de los colegas.
Creo que la frase a la que te refieres tiene que ver con la famosísima colección de cuentos “Las Mil y una noches” (One Thousand and One Nights), y más en concreto con la narración “Las tres manzanas” (The Three Apples), en la que el Califa Harun al-Rashid tiene un protagonismo cenital en la trama, que gira en torno a una investigación policíaca que efectúa el Primer Ministro de Harun para descubrir al asesino.
Probablemente (aunque no estoy seguro), Chesterton se refiere en su frase de “The Poet and the Lunatics” al papel inquisitivo desempeñado por el Califa para desentrañar el misterio de ese cuento, considerado como uno de los modelos más antiguos de la ficción detectivesca, de la cual Chesterton fue también un renombrado escritor (El candor del Padre Brown, etc.).
Tengo mis dudas de que la traducción con el nombre de Harun al-Rashid pueda funcionar en español, ya que la referencia que Chesterton hace de Harun no tiene relación con el Califa en sí ni con su reinado de esplendor (un paradigma en el mundo árabe), sino con su aparición en “Las mil un una noches” y su insistencia y curiosidad detectivescas para descubrir el misterio tal como aparece en el relato “Las tres manzanas”.
